Why Nykaa Ultra Matte Lipstick Review?

By now, you must know how I detest anything drying on my lips. And matte lipsticks just scream dryness and tugging on the skin. I was never a fan of the liquid lipstick bandwagon that almost everyone seemed to jump upon. Sure they are highly pigmented and long-lasting, but they just don’t give that dimension to the lips, which makes them appear lush and attractive. I don’t also mind reapplying lipstick time and again throughout the day. I find some old school satisfaction in holding a compact mirror and applying lipstick.

Recently cream and gloss finish lipsticks are coming back in Vogue and rightfully so. They always give that fresh and natural vibe to the whole makeup look. So when Nyka Launched their Ultra Matte Lipstick, which promised more than any ordinary lipstick, I thought to give it a shot and let you guys know about my experience. I hope you will like the review.

My Lips

I have dry lips that tend to crack when nothing on top of it. I always have to put something moisturizing and hydrating on my lips, so I tend to stay away from matte formulas.

What is the cost and shelf life?

The lipstick costs Rs.550 for 5 Gms of product, which I find pretty decent. With many ongoing sales and discounts, you can quickly get it for far less

How is the Packaging?

The packaging is reminiscent of the Nykaa so matte range. The packaging is exactly the same except for the top, which is color-coded. The bottom has a color-coded sticker with a name attached to it. It has a secure magnetic closure, and although it doesn’t shut that tightly, I haven’t faced any issues of opening in the bag. The packaging of the lipstick feels very sturdy and heavy in the hands. The outer cardboard box that it comes in has intricate golden details, which make it look very regal.

What are the Texture and Fragrance?

There is the mild signature sweet Nykaa Lipstick smell to it, which is not overpowering at all. The texture is Ultra Matte. It’s very matte but not a drying formula at all. The first swipe might tug on your lips, but eventually, it glides smoothly. The texture is pretty hard, and I find that makes the bullet so stiff that if you are not careful while applying, it might break.

One of my Ultra Matte lipstick bullets broke while I was using it on my lips. The bullet just cracked, and I kid you not, so did my heart a little bit when I realized what happened. You understand if you love lipsticks as much as I do. I used the matchsticks trick to melt the bullet’s bottom and stick the two pieces together; hence, the picture of the bullet looks so battered. It was repaired, but still, I use it carefully, just in case.

What is the Shade range?

There are 17 ultra-rich shades. The shade range mostly consists of reds, pinks, and some nude shades that are crafted to suit the Indian skin tones. Some of the shades are so unique that I don’t think I have seen anything like it from any other Indian brand. There are no purple, orange, or some fun, crazy colors. These are everyday shades, and most of them will suit almost all skin tones. There are some classic lipstick shades and some that have the potential to be your new favorite shade of lipstick. Here I have two shades in my collection currently.

Shade- Coco

It’s in the red family for sure. But it has some maroon, brown and pink in it as well. It will look darker on darker skin tones and pinker on lighter skin tones. But it’s such a beautiful and unique shade from the collection. No wonder its one of their best sellers.

Nykaa Ultra Matte Coco

Shade- Madhu

This shade is also in the red family, but it’s a brick red with some orange in it. In-person, it looks a reddish-orange shade but with strong warm undertones. It’s not one of those bright orange-reds but an earthy shade that would look so beautiful on every skin tone. I highly recommended this for the festive season.

How is the Application?

It’s a one-swipe application, and you get maximum pigmentation. I just love the formula. It glides on smoothly, but after some time, it just turns into this luxurious matte finish. It doesn’t look crusty on the lips like the traditional liquid lipsticks but has no shine and moisture effect like cream lipsticks either. It doesn’t accentuate fine lines on lips, but I would recommend exfoliating first. As the formula is matte, you need to prep your lips first to make it look better for a long time. Otherwise, it deposits on the dry skin flakes and doesn’t look nice at all.

What is Longevity?

On my lips, it easily lasts for 6-7 hours. I have been testing all the shades for a couple of days now. They have easily survived light meals and drinks. Even after having a heavy meal, the lipstick was still there. It had faded a bit, but overall it didn’t look bad at all. They transfer a bit, but not that much. They fade evenly and leave a lovely stain behind.

FAQ’s

How to increase the intensity of the lip color?

For a multi-layered effect, first applies your lipstick. Use your lip pencil to draw vertical lines on the lips. Then apply a second layer of lipstick and outline your lips ever so slightly. This will give the appearance of fuller lips and make the lipstick last longer as well.

How to stop my lipstick from drying out my lips?

Always wear a moisturizing lip balm under your lipstick, especially when working with matte formulas. Apply a balm while doing your makeup and keep the lipstick till the end. By the time you apply your lipstick, your lips would be sufficiently moisturized.

How can I stop my lip pencils from breaking?

Store your lip pencils in the icebox before sharpening them. This will not allow them to break easily and also will give them a cleaner and sharper point. Warm the product on the back of your hand a bit before using it for smooth application.

Final thoughts

I love this lipstick, and I am planning to collect some more shades in the future. This is one of the best formulas of lipsticks I have come across. They also are in very flattering colors that anyone can pull off. If you are not a fan of matte methods like me, you would probably like them. I highly recommend them.
